The Beatles recorded Strawberry Fields Forever in late 1966 to include it in the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. However, it was released as a double A-side single along with Penny Lane. Both Strawberry Fields Forever by Lennon and Penny Lane by McCartney express the theme of nostalgia for their childhood in Liverpool. Moreover, even though they refer to real places, the two songs also contain strong surreal and psychedelic connotations typical of the era.
Strawberry Fields Forever is one of the most complex songs in the Beatles' entire production. It took 55 hours of studio work, resulting in several versions of the same song. There was a lighter version that better evoked the carefree serenity of childhood and a darker version that reflected the uneasiness of maturity. The two versions were skillfully merged in the final mix by George Martin, despite being recorded at different speeds and pitches. This was something unimaginable at the time, given the equipment available. John Lennon's genius, the reversed percussion, Paul's mellotron intro, George's swarmandal, and much more make Strawberry Fields Forever a masterpiece of extraordinary beauty and unmatched expressive power.
